We usually think of poaching as an exotic issue, but it happens also in our country and it is fought on multiple fronts, from policing the territory to raising people awareness
Poaching is real in Italy too and, unlike in developing countries, poaching "made in Italy" is solely driven by economi interests: from catching and selling small birds (mainly finches) to be sold in the black market, to the illegal trade in birds of prey.
There's an additional kind of poaching, illegal fishing, which is becoming a real issue in our area, where multiple rivers and wtaer bodies are deprived of their biodiversity to fuel an illegal trade, mainly toeards eastern Europe.
We contacted Anna Maggio, commander of the Polizia Provinciale (local police authority) in Verona to learn more about how "our" poachers act and what drives them, and to learn how every one of us citizens can help in the fight against poaching.
